A general term for the person responsible for administering a deceased person’s estate, whether named in the will (executor) or appointed by the court (administrator). The personal representative has legal authority to gather assets, pay debts and taxes, and distribute remaining assets to beneficiaries. They must follow the terms of the will, if one exists, and comply with state probate laws.
